Aura nails look like each nail is glowing from the inside. A soft burst of color sits in the center and blurs out to a lighter edge, like a halo, a sunset or the photo of an aura. The trend took off because it’s dreamy, colorful and much easier to do than detailed nail art.

What Aura Nails Are

An aura manicure is a radial gradient: one color in the middle, another around the edge, with no hard line between them. Unlike an ombre, which fades from tip to cuticle, aura nails fade outward from the center. The best looks use two colors in the same family or two that blend into a third, like pink into orange.

How It’s Done

  1. Base color. Paint the whole nail in the lighter “edge” color and let it dry (or cure, if using gel).
  2. Center color. Salons usually use an airbrush to spray a soft circle in the middle. At home, dab polish onto a small piece of makeup sponge and press it gently in the center of the nail.
  3. Blend. Press the sponge again around the edge of the center spot to soften it. For gel, you can also rub pigment powder over a tacky layer with an eyeshadow brush.
  4. Clean up. Remove polish from the skin with a small brush dipped in remover.
  5. Top coat. A glossy top coat melts the layers together and makes the blur look smooth.

Best Color Combinations

  • Pink on white: soft and romantic.
  • Orange on yellow: a summer sunset.
  • Purple on lilac or blue: dreamy and cool.
  • Red on nude: subtle enough for work.
  • Green on mint: fresh and unexpected.

Best Nail Shapes

The glow needs a little space, so medium almond and oval shapes look best. On short nails, keep the center spot small so the fade is still visible.

The sponge method is forgiving: if the blur isn’t right, add more and blend again.

A Quick Reality Check

Aura nails are one of the easiest trends to do yourself, and they’re very forgiving of small mistakes. The only thing to watch: if your colors are too similar, the glow disappears. Choose a center shade that clearly contrasts with the base.

Frequently asked questions

What are aura nails?

Aura nails have a soft, blurry spot of color in the center of each nail that fades out toward the edges, like a glowing halo or a mood ring.

Can I do aura nails without an airbrush?

Yes. Dab color onto the center of the nail with a small piece of makeup sponge, then blend the edges. Eyeshadow or nail pigment powder also works on top of a tacky gel layer.

What colors work best for aura nails?

Pairs with contrast work best: pink on white, orange on yellow, purple on blue. The center should be darker or brighter than the base.
