Removing gel polish the wrong way, by peeling or picking, is the number one cause of thin, weak nails. The right way takes about 20 minutes and leaves your nails healthy and ready for the next manicure.

What You Need

  • 100% acetone nail polish remover
  • Cotton pads, cut into small pieces
  • Aluminum foil, cut into small squares (or reusable nail clips)
  • A coarse nail file (100 to 180 grit)
  • An orange wood stick or cuticle pusher
  • A buffer
  • Cuticle oil and hand cream

Step by Step

1. File the Top Coat

Gently file the shiny top coat off each nail. This lets acetone soak into the gel. Don’t file down to your natural nail; just remove the shine.

2. Soak the Cotton

Soak a small piece of cotton in acetone and place it on the nail.

3. Wrap in Foil

Wrap each fingertip in foil to hold the cotton in place and keep the acetone from evaporating. Wrapping your hand in a warm towel speeds things up.

4. Wait 10 to 15 Minutes

Be patient. Gel needs time to soften.

5. Gently Push Off the Gel

Remove one foil at a time. The gel should look wrinkled and lift easily. Use a wood stick to gently push it off from the cuticle toward the tip. If it doesn’t come off easily, rewrap and wait 5 more minutes.

6. Buff and Smooth

Use a soft buffer to gently remove any small bits of gel left.

7. Hydrate

Acetone is drying. Wash your hands, then apply cuticle oil and hand cream generously.

Common Mistakes

  • Peeling the gel off. It takes layers of your natural nail with it.
  • Scraping hard. Forcing the gel off damages the nail surface.
  • Skipping the top coat filing. Acetone can’t get through the top coat.
  • Not moisturizing. Dry nails are brittle and break more easily.

How Often to Take a Break

You don’t have to take breaks from gel if it’s applied and removed properly. But if your nails feel thin or soft, give them a week or two with only cuticle oil and a strengthening treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove gel polish without acetone?

Not effectively. Gel is designed to resist regular remover. Acetone is the safest way to dissolve it without scraping.

How long should I soak gel polish?

Usually 10 to 15 minutes in acetone-soaked cotton wrapped in foil. Some gels need up to 20 minutes.

Why are my nails thin after gel?

Usually because the gel was peeled off or scraped too hard. Peeling pulls off layers of your natural nail.
