Press-on nails have come a long way. Today’s sets look like a salon manicure, cost a fraction of the price and take about 20 minutes to apply. The secret to making them last is all in the prep and sizing.

What You Need

  • A press-on nail set
  • Nail glue or adhesive tabs
  • A nail file and buffer
  • A cuticle pusher
  • Rubbing alcohol or a nail cleanser
  • Cuticle oil (for afterward)

Step by Step

1. Size Every Nail First

Before you open the glue, lay out a press-on for each finger. Choose the size that covers your nail from side wall to side wall without touching the skin. If you’re between sizes, pick the slightly larger one and file the sides to fit.

2. Prep Your Natural Nails

Push back your cuticles, file your nails short and lightly buff the surface. Wipe with alcohol to remove oil. Clean, dry nails are the key to long wear.

3. Choose Glue or Tabs

Glue is stronger and lasts longer, up to two weeks. Adhesive tabs are gentler and easier to remove, but they last only a few days. Tabs are great for one event; glue is better for everyday.

4. Apply

For glue, put a small drop on your natural nail and a thin layer on the underside of the press-on. Place the press-on at your cuticle at a slight angle, then press it down toward the tip. Hold firmly for 10 to 30 seconds.

5. Avoid Air Bubbles

Press from the cuticle to the tip so air pushes out the end. Air bubbles weaken the bond and cause lifting.

6. Avoid Water for an Hour

Let the glue set fully before washing your hands or showering.

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong size. Too big touches the skin and lifts; too small looks fake.
  • Skipping prep. Oil on the nail weakens the glue.
  • Too much glue. It overflows onto the skin and makes removal messy.
  • Pulling them off. This tears layers off your natural nail.

How to Remove Press-Ons Safely

Soak your fingers in warm, soapy water with a little oil for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently lift the press-on from the side with a cuticle stick. If it doesn’t move, soak longer. Never force it.

How Long They Last

With glue: one to two weeks. With tabs: one to three days. Reapply any single nail that comes loose with a drop of glue.
